Born in Dublin in the 1980s, photographer Niall O’Brien’s images are characterized with a rawness that comes with his insatiable need for exploration, for discovering new places and burying himself in the communities that he finds. Long obsessed with youth and counterculture, his projects have moved from photographing and living amongst a group of punks in South London in the 1990s, to travelling across the United States, from Idaho and Washington State to Montana and California. His latest obsession is Louisiana, where he has lived amongst a community deep in the state’s bayou system. It’s all on a whim, he says, his choices of where to travel based on assumption or coincidence – when he arrived in Louisiana he had fantasised about photographing a group of tough female alligators hunters who he had read about living in the bayou’s swamps. He didn’t find them, but he did find a town that welcomed him in, and since, he’s travelled back and forth there, photographing and, for the first time, interviewing the town’s residents.
