STEPHEN DOHERTY, ARTIST
Manchester-born Stephen Doherty creates magic when he puts pen to paper. Or, well, paint, crayon or pastel, or any other of the mediums that he uses to bring his illustrations to life. Starting his career by studying fashion design at Central Saint Martins, a world he became obsessed with after seeing an Alexander McQueen show as a teenager, as well as the photographs of Nick Knight, the has since shifted towards fashion illustration, becoming one of the preeminent young illustrators of the day – creating arresting, emotional images that reinterpret the work of the contemporary fashion designers around him. As well as his fashion illustration, undertaking major projects with Showstudio, he also creates his own work – like Sauna Faces, a vulnerable portrait of real and imagined faces found a gay sauna, or, his latest project, a series of images of flowers. For the last issue of 10 Magazine, he created a selection of illustrations to accompany our written pieces, inspired both by the words and the people around him. Here, he has picked a selection of his favourite recent works, specially for 10 Curates.
